Part IV Translation (10 points)

Qipao is a female dress with distinctive Chinese features and enjoys a growing popularity in the world, becoming international high fashion. The name “Qipao”, meaning “long gawn”, entered the English vocabulary from the dialect of China's Guangdong Province (Cantonese). Whether in leisure or formal occasion, it can always create an impression of simple and quiet charm, elegance and neatness. No wonder it is so much liked not only by Chinese women but also those of foreign countries as well.

How to Be Eternally Graceful

Everyone wants to be forever graceful, especially for women. When you’re young all you want is to be beautiful. However, no one stays physically attractive all the time. Your body will become frail and begin to wither someday, somehow. Remember, nothing is eternally unchanging except the beauty from our inner side.

By definition, inner beauty may be described as something that’s experienced through a person’s character rather than by appearances. The glow of confidence and sex appeal comes from within yourself. Some aren’t really the prettiest of people. But their glowing confidence and self-belief makes them attractive to everyone. You may speak to those for a minute and find them pleasant at first. But as the conversation goes on for a minute or two, you may start to pick qualities and traits, and without even realizing it, you may start to find a person more and more beautiful or charming. The truth is, outer beauty can give you a glance, its inner beauty that makes someone stay.

A positive mental state and a good mood are indispensable for keeping eternally grateful. That is the inner beauty which cannot be kept well by escaping from sun or using highly expensive make-up. Instead, we can be forever graceful by keeping a young, active and optimistic mind and soul, as well as always dressing properly for the occasion.

Part 2 Listening Comprehension (20 points)

Section A (4 points)

Directions: In this section, you will hear two long conversations. At the end of each conversation, you will hear four questions. Both the conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).

Conversation 1

Man: Hey, Becky, look at that girl.

Woman: It’s Jane. She is one of my schoolmates.

Man: She's really pretty, isn't she? Her skin looks so baby smooth!

Woman: Well, it's just that she puts lots of make-up on her face. Actually, natural beauty comes from within.

Man: Ah, I can smell jealousy in the air.

Woman: She has nothing that deserves my jealousy. I don't have to put things on my face and I still look pretty. Don't you think so?

Man: Yeah, right! But what did you put on your face last night, those little greenish things?

Woman: They're cucumbers. They're natural skin soothers, natural healers of the skin. Haven't you heard them say on TV that...erh...they soften the skin, wipe out the roughness, counter irritation, and build strength and resilience?

Man: Yeah, yeah, yeah! They wipe out tight, tired feelings and remove lines and age signs. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! See I can even recite it.

WomanThat's right! You've learned a lot, haven't you?

Questions 36 to 39 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

  1. 36.     What is the probable relationship between Jane and Becky?

  2. 37.     How does Becky think of Jane’s skin?

  3. 38.     What did Becky do with cucumbers?

  4. 39.     What can you infer from the conversation?

Conversation 2

Woman: Mac, you know what? Connie's going to get a face lift.

Man: Oh?

Woman: She even said she'd get the rest done, too!

Man: The rest? You mean she will go for plastic surgery?

Woman: Yeah! Mac, if my face gets wrinkled, would you still love me?

Man: What?

Woman: Answer my question, please!

Man: What a silly question! Love has nothing to do with face being baby smooth or wrinkled, pinky or dark. You should know that inner glamour matters much more.

Woman: Yes, I surely know that. I’m just asking. You don’t have to be impatient.

Man: And Connie, she is crazy. No one can sustain youth forever. And plastic surgeries are risky.

Woman: Yeah. That's what I told her. Oh, I think I'm getting old. You see. The forehead is wrinkled, the eyes are puffy, and the skin is no longer as resilient as it was. Why! Age has set in!  Oh, I really miss the good old days. At that time, my skin really felt so baby smooth!

Man: Liz, look. You are still you. Don’t make any change. Oh, it’s getting late. Let’s make the bed.

Fashion designer Coco Chanel, born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France, is famous for her timeless designs, trademark suits and little black dresses. Chanel was raised in an orphanage and taught to sew. She had a brief career as a singer before opening her first clothes shop in 1910.

Opening her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910, Chanel started out selling hats. She later added stores in Deauville and Biarritz and began making clothes.

In the 1920s, she launched her first perfume and eventually introduced the Chanel suit and the little black dress, with an emphasis on making clothes that were more comfortable for women. Her first taste of clothing success came from a dress she fashioned out of an old jersey on a chilly day. In response to the many people who asked about where she got the dress, she offered to make one for them. “My fortune is built on that old jersey that I’d put on because it was cold in Deauville,” she once told author Paul Morand.

Coco Chanel died on January 10, 1971, at her apartment in the Hotel Ritz. She never married, having once said “I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.” Hundreds crowded together at the Church of the Madeleine to bid farewell to the fashion icon. In tribute, many of the mourners wore Chanel suits.
